Indigenous seasons interpretation with the comparison between different culture background

Abstract

Cross-culture design is worth to be explored for designers and audiences. Designers face the challenge to understand and interpret the different cultural ideas and audiences choose to receive and accept the implication designers convey. Difficulties will appear during the cross-culture design process, the reflection will be concluded after the project. Cross-culture background is a complex topic to discuss, in the project, I chose to focus on season ideas in the different cultural context as it is closely related to living, agriculture and manufacture.

For a long time, residents lived with season ideas cultivated by unique climate and civil. In the research, two native season ideas are discussed in design practice. For Melbourne, Gariwerd calendar shows the indigenous livelihood and ecology system. Six distinct weather periods indicating how people live in this land for thousands of years (Visit Victoria, 2020). Similarly, in the other sphere, Chinese live follow the solar terms, a tradition seasons indicating system with 24 weather periods, influencing residents’ daily route tine and agriculture.

  • In phase one, as the early stage of the project, the preparation work I’ve done including background research, reference collection and requirements identification. Interview went on in this phase and a detailed persona was designed.

  • In phase 2, the exact plan came out. I closely related the culture idea with daily life scenes. The plan one is my first developing plan after the brainstorm. However, this combination is two simple and show many unreasonable places. Thus, the second plan interpreted the two-season idea separately.

  • Phase three is the developing stage as the practical design needs to be completed to demonstrate the researchers' proposal. Reflecting the processes and concluding the findings are necessary for communication.
